The Damning of Retrospect

Where only eagles might once have dared

standing alone upon the crag

out over a great precipice

with only a ravine

winding

so deep under

where finally only the river roars

temptations beckon forth,

 cold wind howls on

self

one

alone

finally stripped

to bare nakedness

nothing to hide behind

left alone with only

thoughts

memories

regrets

once,

aloofness, and smugness

fullness of self

youth

only once seeming impregnable

only facades

in reality

thinly veiled shielding

finally stripped clean

prone, frail

and left pondering,

what is a true starkness

knowing vulernability

feeling sharpened edge of finality

and regret…
